THE MAGIC OF FREEDOM by PASTOR DALE FREEMAN As an illusionist, I try to watch every Television Special dealing with boggling the minds of young and old alike. Seldom has it been done better than by David Copperfield on April 8, 1983. In case you missed that particular performance, I'll try to describe the event. It was the night that he created the illusion before a live nationwide television audience that the Statue of Liberty had disappeared. Following the incredible feat, the master showman spoke for a moment about what had taken place. He shared that he was a son of immigrants, and that his mother had always pointed with pride to France's gift to America that stands in New York Harbor. She wasn't impressed by its enormity, but by a poem by Emma Lazarus etched in its foundation. "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." She always thought of those words as the basic philosophy of American democracy. He ended the program by reminding everyone that as long as people remembered to communicate, to care, and to show compassion, the meaning of the statue would ring true. "True freedom," he declared, "is magic." As we celebrate another Fourth of July, let's remember that noone is truly free unless they are free within themselves. Just being an American doesn't grant freedom. Freedom of heart and soul can only come through faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. We need to give our lives to the quest of lifting Him high, and proclaiming the Gospel to all around so that they may know "the Truth," and thereby truly be "set free." Real freedom. It's much more than magic. It's a miracle!!! |
