THE HOMECOMING
by Jake Thomas

There's a small church down in Texas,
Where my family used to go.
Come every Sunday morning,
We would all hit the road.
The team that pulled the wagon
Seemed to know the way;
And sense the feeling beforehand,
They would be there all that day.

We brought along our dinner,
To spread it in the shade;
While the team in their contentment
Nibbled on some hay.
Sunday School would start
At a quarter after ten
And about an hour later
The Preaching began.

The servant of God with a voice
That was deep;
Kept everyone's attention
So no one would sleep.

There would come new members,
Re-dedications too.
Why, you knew then
The Lord was coming through.

When the service was over,
The kids couldn't wait
To fill their stomachs with
Pie and cake.

When dinner was through
And the food was put away;
Grown-ups and children
Would all begin to play.

When playtime wa over,
All would go inside;
To sing praises of glory
To our Lord on high.

Quartets, trios, duets, too
Come from other churches to join us too.
Amens were given
Praise the Lord you could hear
Why, there was no question
But what the Lord was near.

The ones outside, one by one,
Would move toward the door.
Why, they could hear Jesus calling,
And desired to hear more.

Tears like rain was falling
Oh! What a beautiful sight
You could tell, by the faces aglow,
They would sleep better that night.

Time has passed by, and I've moved away
It being God's will, I'll go back someday.
And stand at the grave of Dad and Mom and tell
Them what God has done for their son.

I want to thank you, Lord, indeed I do.
For giving me parents like those two.
